When it comes to the metal frame, we generally offer 12-gauge and 14-gauge steel. Both of these options are premium metals which can withstand any weather and wear or tear over the long period of time.
14-guage framing is structurally strong enough to resist immense loads and can handle most of the weather conditions. However, if you live in an area where extreme weather is frequent or if you just want extra safety for your metal structure then you can add structural strength to the metal barn by using the framing with 12-gauge steel tubes.
Metal Barn Material Thickness (Gauge)
The steel framing of the structure is made with 14-gauge or 12-gauge galvanized steel tubing; the metal panels are made with 29-gauge galvanized steel sheets.
Gauge stands for, “the thickness, size, or capacity of something, especially as a standard measure, in particular.” In the case of metal buildings, steel gauge means the thickness and strength of the steel components of that structure. Hence, the thicker the framing, the more strength, and the value it adds to the overall property.
14-Gauge Framing (strong)
The 14-gauge steel frame measures 2 ½” x 2 ½” inches diameter. The 14 gauge frame tends to be more economical than the 12-gauge frame and has a lower tensile strength. So, metal carport or metal building kits with 14-gauge framing are cost-effective and are recommended in areas with a mild climate.
12-Gauge Framing (stronger)
The 12-gauge steel frame measures 2 ¼” x 2 ¼” in diameter. It is thicker than the 14-gauge frame and is the strongest option available for metal buildings. The 12-gauge framing is more useful for the carports in the areas with frequent and heavy snow and wind. It provides more tensile strength, hence, the chances of breakage are none.
If you are thinking of installing a metal building near areas prone to tornados, hurricanes or hailstorms, you must ensure that you have a strong concrete slab for the base and the strongest metal frames, support, and panels for your metal buildings.
For the areas which receive heavy rainfall and snowfall, you can consider installing a 12-gauge metal frame and 26-gauge roof panels. For the areas with hot and humid temperature, installing a 14-gauge premium metal frames and 29-gauge roof panels might suffice.
